A Christmas Carol Returns To Cygnet Theatre For Its Ninth Season of Holiday Cheer

With Artistic Director Sean Murray as Ebenezer Scrooge

Performances run December 1 through 30, 2023.

SAN DIEGO, CA – A Christmas Carol returns to Cygnet Theatre for its ninth season of cheer. It has become a true holiday favorite, with San Diegans making Scrooge, the Spirits, and the Cratchit family part of their holiday tradition. Sean Murray, who has directed the holiday musical each year, will once again step into the role of Scrooge in 2023. The family-friendly musical runs December 1 through 30 at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town. Opening Night for media is Saturday, December 2 at 7:00pm.

Written by Charles Dickens and adapted by Sean Murray, with an original score by Billy Thompson, A Christmas Carol is Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of hope and redemption. This production is a re-imagined take on the original holiday classic featuring lively music, unique puppets and live sound effects.

Murray reflects, “Why do I keep coming back to this story? I have always found myself discovering new points, new observations, new insights in it upon every encounter with Mr. Scrooge and his night of reckoning. I’m fascinated by his astonishing face-off with his own past and how that might shape all his future deeds. Or the majestic sweep of the present and the rich, complicated world of interconnected people we all are. And of course, the imagery of a future world without oneself in it, and the notion of how one’s deeds in life will foreshadow one’s legacy. It all never ceases to amaze me how much there is in this beloved story.”

Cygnet Theatre will once again be transformed into a Victorian Christmas card thanks to the creativity of Set Designer Andrew Hull. Colby Freel is Lighting Designer and Sound Designer is Matt Lescault Wood. Costumes are by Jeanne Reith, and Peter Herman will provide wigs and makeup. Choreography is by Katie Banville. Original puppets designed by Michael McKeon. Musical Director is Patrick Marion. Dean Remington is Stage Manager.

Joining Sean Murray on stage are David McBean, Patrick McBride, Eileen Bowman, Megan Carmitchel, Jasmine January, and Allen Lucky Weaver. With the exception of Murray, all actors play multiple roles.

As part of the theatre’s accessibility and inclusion efforts, this year sees the return of a sensory-friendly performance, which will be held on Wednesday, December 27th at 10:00 AM. Sensory-friendly performances are designed to create a welcoming and comfortable arts experience for people with autism, sensory sensitivity, or other social, learning or cognitive disabilities.

CYGNET THEATRE AWARDS 2026 DEE SILVER, M.D. COMMISSION TO PLAYWRIGHT CHRISTOPHER LYSIK

Partnership with the Iowa Playwrights Workshop brings Lysik’s new musical to San Diego for a free public reading on January 17.
SAN DIEGO, CA – (Dec 17, 2025) Cygnet Theatre is proud to announce Christopher Lysik as the recipient of the 2026 Dee Silver, M.D. Commission. The commission, in partnership with the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, reinforces Cygnet’s ongoing commitment to developing new theatrical works. A free public reading of Lysik’s new musical is scheduled for January 17, 2026, at Cygnet Theatre.

Established in 2023, the Dee Silver, M.D. Commission provides a platform for narratives that convey strength and hope, aiming to enrich the national theatrical landscape with stories that foster empathy. The partnership with the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, one of the oldest and most distinguished MFA playwriting programs, offers a current MFA fellow the opportunity to further develop a new piece for the stage under this commission.

Lysik, a 2024 graduate of the Iowa Playwrights Workshop MFA program, was chosen to develop and refine a new work that aligned with the mission of the commission. The play was first developed during a post-graduate fellowship and received a staged reading at the University of Iowa. The next phase brings the playwright to San Diego for a three-day workshop, culminating in a public reading at Cygnet Theatre.

A New England native, Christopher Lysik writes plays, music and works that blend the two. He is a recipient of the Kennedy Center’s National Playwriting Award for American Rusałki and Jean Kennedy Smith Award for Pierogi Play. His work has been recognized by SPACE on Ryder Farm, the O’Neill National Music Theater Conference, New Harmony Project, Williamstown Theatre Festival and others. At Iowa, he held both the Marcus Bach and Dee Silver, M.D. Fellowships.

Lysik’s commissioned piece, Songs for the Anthropocene, follows a small group of singers confronting the emotional toll of a changing planet. Part play and part concert, the work explores the climate crisis and the uncertainty of the future through a music-driven lens.

“With the generous support and vision of Dr. Dee Silver, we are thrilled to partner with Cygnet Theatre again to uplift new voices as they graduate from the Iowa Playwrights Workshop and bring their artistry to a national audience,” said Lisa Schlesinger, co-head of the program. “Cygnet is known for adventurous, thought-provoking work. Their commitment to developing our writers affirms our graduates’ readiness to enter the industry as emerging theatre artists.”

The commission is made possible thanks to the contribution of Dee Silver, M.D. “I am honored to be able to help make possible the performance of the musical Songs for the Anthropocene written by a very talented Playwright and musician from the University of Iowa’s Playwrights Workshop, one of the best academic programs in the country. He has carefully and enjoyably combined current issues, memorable lyrical music, entertaining dialogue and mythology into a thoughtful journey for the audience,” explained Silver.

The reading and reception are FREE to the public. Seats may be reserved online at CygnetTheatre.org, in person at the box office located at 2880 Roosevelt Road in the Arts District Liberty Station, by calling 619-337-1525 or by emailing BoxOffice@CygnetTheatre.org.

Teacher Testimonial – Linda Libby (Teacher and Cygnet Resident Artist)

I’ve taught 5th grade through graduate school students, and for more years than I can count I have heard teachers struggle to teach empathy. How do we impress upon our young people that they matter – that their choices matter – that what they choose to do or to not do – to be or not to be – they have impact on the world.

The theater is where choices are made public, questioned and challenged. We see the consequences of characters’ actions. We discuss these passionate people and compare our stories to theirs. Through the lens of the play, we talk about taboo subjects we would otherwise avoid. We can talk about ourselves and our own struggles by spending a few hours with characters we relate to on stage. The theater reminds us that we are all human.

So, when I have the opportunity for my classes to be visited by a teaching artist who prepares students to attend a professional production at Cygnet Theatre, we crack open students’ minds. Once they have experienced the production, they are inspired by the craftsmanship of the designers, directors and actors. In talkbacks and post-production workshops they get an understanding of the process that moved them. Years later, they refer back to a moment from the play or a particular artist they connected with.

By giving students the chance to see “how art is really made,” the bar for their own work raises. Seeing excellent art inspires them. And when we are inspired, we each become better at what we do.

I’m not sure that I can aptly articulate the importance of the educational theatre experience. Beyond building the theatre audiences of the future, we demonstrate the essence of connection. Our youth, now more than ever, need to know that they are seen, that they matter, and what better way to do that then to bring them to the theater where their experiences are reflected on the stage and the artists “hold the mirror – as ‘t’were – up to nature.”

PLAYWRIGHTS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2025 BILL AND JUDY GARRETT FINISH LINE COMMISSION

In Partnership with the UCSD MFA Playwriting Program, Cygnet’s New Play Commission Returns with Three New Playwrights at their New Home in Liberty Station, The Joan

SAN DIEGO, CA – Cygnet Theatre announces its lineup of playwrights for the 2025 Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission. In partnership with the UCSD MFA Playwriting Program, the commission supports Cygnet’s commitment to new theatrical works, written by groundbreaking local and nationally recognized playwrights. The 2025 artists include MFA Playwright Katie Đỗ and local playwrights Jonah Gercke and Christopher Oscar Peña. The Finish Line Producer is Kian Kline-Chilton. Free public readings of all three plays will take place November 14-15, 2025 at Cygnet Theatre.

Playwrights awarded The Finish Line Commission receive a week-long developmental workshop, culminating in a public reading, financial support, and the opportunity for a world premiere production at Cygnet Theatre.

“Finish Line has always been a cornerstone of joy in San Diego’s new work landscape: a defining celebration of the incredible talent in our community,” said Commission Producer Kian Kline-Chilton. “What a perfect group to inaugurate the first festival at the Joan. As we approach the festival’s 10-year anniversary, I feel deeply honored to be at the helm, supporting these artists and the vibrant community that makes it all possible.”

The Finish Line Commission is made possible thanks to the contribution of long-time donors Bill and Judy Garrett. “We happily support the nurturing of new playwrights who are exploring provocative, entertaining, contemporary stories and topics to add to the vast lexicon of theatrical works currently available to performers and audiences. We’re delighted to be able to continue to help create new works for today’s world,” explained Judy Garrett.

The Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission provides:

  • Financial support to the playwright, actors, and director
  • A Finish Line Commission grant for a local playwright and right of first refusal
  • Rehearsal space and production support
  • Public in-person readings of all plays
  • A series of public talk-backs and a playwright reception

The readings and surrounding events are FREE to the public. Seats may be reserved in person at the box office located at 2880 Roosevelt Rd. at The Joan in Arts District Liberty Station, by calling 619-337-1525 or online at https://cygnettheatre.org/show/upcoming-shows/the-finish-line/

PLAYS AND PLAYWRIGHTS

RIGHT HAND LEFT HAND

By Jonah Gercke

Reading: November 14 at 7:00 PM

Right Hand Left Hand is a play that takes place over the course of a hot summer weekend in the Brooklyn neighborhood of BedStuy, where nonbinary journalist David sweats it out between the chaotic confines of an Israeli-owned juice bar and their illegal basement apartment. Caught between the cultural tensions that flare between their Israeli bosses (one of whom they might be seeing on the side) and their Palestinian friends getting married on the other end of town, David has to confront the inherent contradictions of life in the middle of a century-old conflict as the sweltering New York City heat drives everyone a little crazy.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT:

Jonah Gercke is a filmmaker, playwright, and journalist currently based out of New York City. They have filmed and produced documentaries in Palestine, Venezuela, China, and Greece, and have worked on film sets throughout the United States and India. Their narrative thesis film The Little Monk screened at Anthology Film Archive and the North Hollywood Cinefest. Their written work, including the feature article “A Bad Thing Haunts Slab City,” has appeared in outlets such as SPIN Magazine. They are a frequent collaborator of Jordan Howlett (more than 30 million followers across all platforms), and through this partnership they have written and edited content for Michael B. Jordan, Ryan Coogler, and Jordan Peele. Their stage work has been produced at New Village Arts Theater in Carlsbad, California.

DIRTY MARTINI

By Katie Đỗ

Reading: November 15 at 3:00 PM

Dirty Martini is a play about a trio of women falling in and out of friendship with each other, spanning many decades. The three women struggle at different points in time, switching what role they play in an ever-evolving dynamic. “Dirty Martini” looks at friendship under the tension of personal politics, the magic of “platonic” love, and the reckoning of self in the wake of secrets told too late.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT:

Katie Đỗ (she/her) is a Vietnamese American woman with a mouth from New Jersey. She’s a proud alum of the Sống Collective’s Việt Writers Lab and the Public’s Emerging Writers Group. Đỗ is also the inaugural recipient of Merrimack Repertory Theatre’s Sokhary Chau Playwriting Fellowship. Her plays have been developed by South Coast Repertory (Pacific Playwrights Festival), Atlantic Theater Company (MixFest), The Sống Collective, The Public Theater, Orlando Shakes, and Artists at Play. Her play love you long time (already) was featured on the 2023 Kilroy’s Web and who hurt you? was a 2025 Venturous Theater Fellowship finalist. She also wrote on the Netflix show Partner Track. She is a first year MFA Playwriting candidate at UCSD. kteado.com

LOS FELIZ

By Christopher Oscar Peña

Reading: November 15 at 6:00 PM

Set between Los Angeles and the fantasies it sells, Los Feliz is a sharp, funny, and deeply personal play about art, race, and the cost of being seen. When a rising filmmaker’s project bends to studio pressure, his collaborator and closest friend challenges what success really means. Moving from a film set to a queer bar and beyond, Christopher Oscar Peña delivers a biting, meta-theatrical love letter to artists who risk everything to be authentic.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT:

Christopher Oscar Peña (he/him) is a story-teller originally from California, now residing in New York and LA. In 2019 he co-directed the world premiere of Sean Daniels adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “lost novel” The Haunted Life at Merrimack Rep. The production marked the first time the Kerouac Estate had ever sanctioned an official theatrical adaptation of Kerouac’s work. Most recently, as a playwright, the Clarence Brown Theatre commissioned and produced the world premiere of his play The Strangers. In New York, the Flea Theatre produced the world premiere of his play a cautionary tail. His work has been developed by Playwrights Horizons, the Goodman Theater, Public Theater, Two River Theater, INTAR, Ontological Hysteric Incubator, Playwrights Realm, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Old Vic, Orchard Project, Naked Angels, and New York Theatre Workshop, among many others. This upcoming season, his play how to make an American Sonwill have its world premiere in a co-production between Arizona Theatre Company and Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre in New York. A two-time Sundance Institute Theater Fellow, he has also held fellowships with the Lark Play Development Center, was a recipient of the Latino Playwrights Award, an Emerging Artist Fellow at New York Theatre Workshop, Playwrights Realm Writing Fellow, and was a part of the US/UK Exchange (Old Vic New Voices).B.A. UC Santa Barbara / M.F.A. Interview with Mars Lorens

Mars Lorens

Q: What was it like rehearsing in the new space for the first time, especially with a cast this large, and how did that compare to Cygnet’s old rehearsal space?

A: Don’t tell any of the other rehearsal spaces around town, but this new rehearsal studio is one of the nicest I’ve worked in. Having the space to comfortably fit a cast of 27 in one rehearsal room feels luxurious, and I don’t like to think about what rehearsing a show of this size in the old rehearsal space would look like. And it isn’t just the space! We are also very lucky to have nice big windows all around the room with beautiful views of Liberty Station and lots of natural light streaming in. A big step up from the old closed-off garage!

Q: How many shows have you stage managed for Cygnet and how has this experience differed?

A: This is my 10th show I’ve worked on at Cygnet! I have been Production Stage Manager for 7 shows and Assistant Stage Manager for 3. This production in particular feels different just because of the newness of it all. It’s been an honor to be the first team to start puzzling out how to work in a brand-new building. There are little things you take for granted when you’re settled in a building like we were in Old Town – such as being able to find the light switches in the dark, with my eyes closed.

Q: How was the tech process for you as Stage Manager? Any challenges or pleasant surprises?

A: Surprisingly enough, the tech process went far smoother than I think anyone anticipated. Shout-outs to the production team’s prep work to get us to tech, but once we were in it, it felt just like any other tech process. The best part of tech was having a rehearsal room nearby that we could work in while we were teching onstage.

Q: Favorite thing about this show or process overall?

A: My favorite part of this process is seeing all the hard work of so many people come together to bring this show to life.

Q: Anything you’d like to say to Cygnet’s donors?

A: Thank you for your support of live theatre! Theatre is nothing without its audiences and your support is so important in keeping this art form thriving.
