San Diego Artist Karole Foreman Returns to Cygnet as Jazz Icon Billie Holiday.
Performances run January 24 – February 18, 2024
SAN DIEGO, CA – Cygnet Theatre is pleased to announce the cast and creative team of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill by Lanie Robertson. This riveting one-act musical is directed by Wren T. Brown, the Artistic Director at Ebony Repertory Theatre. It runs January 24 – February 18 at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town. Opening Night for media is Saturday, January 27 at 7:00 PM. Tickets and information are available at CygnetTheatre.com.
Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill recounts Billie Holiday’s life story through the songs that made her famous. 1959, in a small, intimate bar in Philadelphia, Holiday puts on a show that unbeknownst to the audience, will leave them witnesses to one of the last performances of her lifetime. Through her poignant voice and moving songs, one of the greatest jazz singers of all-time shares her loves and her losses.
Playing the jazz icon is San Diego native Karole Foreman, who has graced the Cygnet stage in A Little Night Music and Stupid F**king Bird. She said “I am looking forward to coming home to San Diego and to Cygnet Theatre to perform Lady Day. It’s been a profound opportunity to share Billie Holiday’s story with so many audiences, but I am particularly excited to be here in my hometown with this production. I also feel honored to be able to be a part of Cygnet’s final season in Old Town. It feels like a full circle moment.”
Artistic Director Sean Murray was thrilled to be able to include Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill in the Season 20 lineup. He said, “I’ve been dreaming of bringing Karole’s performance as the jazz legend Billie Holiday to our audience and to San Diego for some time. She has dazzled in this role since she debuted it in Los Angeles, and subsequently throughout the country for a couple of years now. Karole is one of Cygnet’s favorite performers and we are thrilled to share her take on Billie with San Diego.”
Karole will be accompanied by Damon Carter on piano as Jimmy Powers. Carter is also the musical director for the show.
In addition to direction by Wren T. Brown, the creative team for Cygnet’s production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill includes original scenic design by Edward E. Haynes Jr., with Mathys Herbert as associate scenic designer. Sound design is by Evan Eason, lighting design by Donna Ruzika, costume design by Kimberly DeShazo, wig and makeup design by Peter Herman, and stage management by Craig Campbell.

SAN DIEGO, CA – (Sept 18, 2025) – Cygnet Theatre proudly presents the offbeat comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang. Directed by Anthony Methvin, the play will run from October 8 to November 9, 2025 and will be the inaugural production in The Dottie Studio Theater in Cygnet Theatre’s permanent home, The Joan in Arts District Liberty Station. Opening Night is Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 7:00pm (Pacific Time).
This riotous comedy blends sibling drama with Chekhovian absurdity. When movie star Masha returns to her childhood home with her boy-toy Spike, she upends the quiet lives of her quirky brother Vanya and adopted sister Sonia. Chaos ensues in this whip-smart, laugh-out-loud play about family dysfunction, middle-aged angst, and the unexpected joys of life.
“There’s a reason this play won both a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize—it continues to speak to us in exciting ways,” says director Anthony Methvin. “It’s not only Durang’s most fun work, but also his most sincere and grounded. It’s a thrilling opportunity to bring it to life.”
The cast features Andrew D. Oswald as Vanya; Shana Wride as Sonia; Eileen Bowman as Masha; Sean Brew as Spike; Daisy Martinez as Cassandra; and Emma Nossal as Nina.
The creative team for Cygnet’s production for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike includes Yi-Chien Lee, Scenic Design; Curtis Mueller, Lighting Design; Evan Eason, Sound Design; Heather K. Nunn, Costume Design; Bonnie Durben, Props Design; Peter Herman, Wig/Makeup Design; Hannah Meade, Intimacy Consultant; Jared Blake Halsell, Stage Manager; and Jaz Villalino, Assistant Stage Manager.

I’ve taught 5th grade through graduate school students, and for more years than I can count I have heard teachers struggle to teach empathy. How do we impress upon our young people that they matter – that their choices matter – that what they choose to do or to not do – to be or not to be – they have impact on the world.
The theater is where choices are made public, questioned and challenged. We see the consequences of characters’ actions. We discuss these passionate people and compare our stories to theirs. Through the lens of the play, we talk about taboo subjects we would otherwise avoid. We can talk about ourselves and our own struggles by spending a few hours with characters we relate to on stage. The theater reminds us that we are all human.
So, when I have the opportunity for my classes to be visited by a teaching artist who prepares students to attend a professional production at Cygnet Theatre, we crack open students’ minds. Once they have experienced the production, they are inspired by the craftsmanship of the designers, directors and actors. In talkbacks and post-production workshops they get an understanding of the process that moved them. Years later, they refer back to a moment from the play or a particular artist they connected with.
By giving students the chance to see “how art is really made,” the bar for their own work raises. Seeing excellent art inspires them. And when we are inspired, we each become better at what we do.
I’m not sure that I can aptly articulate the importance of the educational theatre experience. Beyond building the theatre audiences of the future, we demonstrate the essence of connection. Our youth, now more than ever, need to know that they are seen, that they matter, and what better way to do that then to bring them to the theater where their experiences are reflected on the stage and the artists “hold the mirror – as ‘t’were – up to nature.”

Audiences are invited to bring the whole family to this joyful event filled with music, dance and cheer — the perfect way to light up the season.

“Finish Line has always been a cornerstone of joy in San Diego’s new work landscape: a defining celebration of the incredible talent in our community,” said Commission Producer Kian Kline-Chilton. “What a perfect group to inaugurate the first festival at the Joan. As we approach the festival’s 10-year anniversary, I feel deeply honored to be at the helm, supporting these artists and the vibrant community that makes it all possible.”

Q: What was it like rehearsing in the new space for the first time, especially with a cast this large, and how did that compare to Cygnet’s old rehearsal space?
A: Don’t tell any of the other rehearsal spaces around town, but this new rehearsal studio is one of the nicest I’ve worked in. Having the space to comfortably fit a cast of 27 in one rehearsal room feels luxurious, and I don’t like to think about what rehearsing a show of this size in the old rehearsal space would look like. And it isn’t just the space! We are also very lucky to have nice big windows all around the room with beautiful views of Liberty Station and lots of natural light streaming in. A big step up from the old closed-off garage!
Q: How many shows have you stage managed for Cygnet and how has this experience differed?
A: This is my 10th show I’ve worked on at Cygnet! I have been Production Stage Manager for 7 shows and Assistant Stage Manager for 3. This production in particular feels different just because of the newness of it all. It’s been an honor to be the first team to start puzzling out how to work in a brand-new building. There are little things you take for granted when you’re settled in a building like we were in Old Town – such as being able to find the light switches in the dark, with my eyes closed.
Q: How was the tech process for you as Stage Manager? Any challenges or pleasant surprises?
A: Surprisingly enough, the tech process went far smoother than I think anyone anticipated. Shout-outs to the production team’s prep work to get us to tech, but once we were in it, it felt just like any other tech process. The best part of tech was having a rehearsal room nearby that we could work in while we were teching onstage.
Q: Favorite thing about this show or process overall?
A: My favorite part of this process is seeing all the hard work of so many people come together to bring this show to life.
Q: Anything you’d like to say to Cygnet’s donors?
A: Thank you for your support of live theatre! Theatre is nothing without its audiences and your support is so important in keeping this art form thriving.
