Cygnet Theatre Announces the Cast and Creative Team of Stefano Massini’s The Lehman Trilogy

Performances run March 25 – April 19, 2026

The production chronicles three generations of the Lehman family and the rise and collapse of their financial empire.

SAN DIEGO, CA (February 26, 2026) – Cygnet Theatre proudly presents the gripping saga The Lehman Trilogy by Stefano Massini. Directed by Kim Strassburger, the play will run from March 25 to April 19, 2026 and will be produced in The Dottie Studio Theater in Cygnet Theatre’s permanent home, The Joan in Arts District Liberty Station. Opening Night is Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 7:00pm (Pacific Time).

Winner of the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play, The Lehman Trilogy is an epic theatrical event chronicling more than 150 years of American history. The sweeping drama follows the rise and fall of the Lehman Brothers, tracing their journey from humble immigrant beginnings to the pinnacle of Wall Street power. What begins as a small family business evolves into a financial empire, revealing a story of ambition, innovation and the far-reaching consequences of unchecked capitalism. Performed by three actors portraying more than 70 roles, this production blends intimate storytelling with grand-scale spectacle as visually striking as it is intellectually compelling.

“The play takes you across three centuries, 1840s to 2008, tracking the journey of how the Lehman family and their little store evolved into a huge Wall Street investment bank and then, as we know in 2008, folded,” says director Kim Strassburger. “The play asks us to question the decisions and the paths that they take towards achieving the American dream.”

The cast features Jacob Caltrider as Mayer Lehman; Steven Lone as Emmanuel Lehman; and Bruce Turk as Henry Lehman.

The creative team for Cygnet’s production for The Lehman Trilogy includes Matt Herman, Scenic Design; Sammy Webster, Lighting Design; George Ye, Sound Design; Jeanne Reith, Costume Design; Bonnie Durben, Props Design; Peter Herman, Wig/Makeup Design; Emerson Clarke, Assistant Director and Assistant Dramaturg; Ali Flores, Stage Manager; and Katie Chiyoko Davis, Assistant Stage Manager.

Tickets for The Lehman Trilogy are on sale now and may be purchased in person at the box office, by phone at 619-337-1525, or by visiting CygnetTheatre.org. Cygnet Theatre is located at 2880 Roosevelt Road in Arts District Liberty Station. Regular ticket prices start at $58.

CYGNET THEATRE COMPLETES 22ND SEASON LINEUP WITH THE ADDITION OF JOHN PROCTOR IS THE VILLAIN

SAN DIEGO, CA – Cygnet Theatre has announced the addition of the acclaimed play John Proctor Is the Villain, officially completing the eight-show lineup for the company’s 22nd season. Written by Kimberly Belflower, the play fills the previously to-be-announced (TBA) slot on Cygnet’s season schedule, March 17-April 11, 2027 in the Dottie Studio Theater.

Recently named one of the “50 Influential Titles of the 21st Century” by American Theatre magazine, John Proctor Is the Villain boldly flips Arthur Miller’s The Crucible on its head. Set in a present-day high school English classroom, the play follows a group of sharp, ambitious young women as they re-examine a revered literary hero — and begin to question the narratives they’ve been taught to accept. What unfolds is a fierce, funny, and razor-sharp exploration of power, reputation, and who gets to control the story.

“Kimberly Belflower’s John Proctor Is the Villain is the perfect complement to the entirety of our season,” said Cygnet Artistic Director Sean Murray. “This comedy shines its light on a generation in mid-transformation as they dive into the American classic, The Crucible, in their English class. They discover that they need not be bound by the past and learn to claim the power to change how they see themselves and the world in which they live. We can’t wait to dive deeper into this material with our artists and audiences.”

Originally commissioned by The Farm Theater for its College Collaboration Project, the play quickly became a regional sensation, with acclaimed productions in Washington, D.C. (2022) and Boston (2024), followed by a Broadway run earlier this year. A film adaptation is currently in development, further cementing John Proctor’s Is the Villain‘s cultural impact.

With its wit, urgency, and emotional depth, John Proctor Is the Villain promises to be one of the most talked-about theatrical events of Cygnet’s 2026–27 season.

Interview with Production Manager Eric Clark

Q: The production team has had to adapt to a bigger stage and bigger sets in the Clayes. How has the process compared to Old Town so far? What have been the biggest benefits/challenges?

A: It has been a massive learning curve; navigating not only a larger physical space, but also a brand-new space that we aren’t able to utilize institutional knowledge of previous productions to help solve issues. In Old Town, we had the benefit of over a decade of productions to help inform capabilities, overcome challenges, and avoid some missteps. In the Clayes, we have a beautiful space that we are still learning how to use and what does and doesn’t work in real time. A benefit of being in the Clayes is starting from scratch; a new facility means that we are able to be intentional with how we install and document changes we make so that Cygnet can have a log of adjustments that needed to be made to help build a strong foundation for the future.

Q: This is the first time Cygnet has been able to have two shows running simultaneously. What was that process like in terms of planning/building the sets/striking shows/etc.?

A: I think it caught us all by surprise when we realized how quick the turnaround from Follies into Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike was. We have always had to coordinate between each other’s departments, but with two shows happening simultaneously our work and communication naturally had to double. We all quickly learned how to jump from project to project, and how to plan out projects even further in advance than we have been. For example, we struck Follies, loaded in A Christmas Carol, struck Vanya, and loaded in Magical Holiday all within 5 weeks. For me personally, I have gone from mapping out the next couple of months to working on scheduling the next six months just to stay on top of everything before it comes up.

Q: What is your favorite part about working at Cygnet and/or being in The Joan officially?

A: I think our team is my favorite part of working here. Knowing that we have some of the hardest working people I have been lucky enough to work with inspires me daily. The food options around Liberty Station are a close second.

Q: What show are you most looking forward to in the remainder of this season and why?

A: There are quite a few, but I think The SpongeBob Musical will be a lot of fun for everyone. I grew up watching the cartoon religiously and doing a big, silly musical about it will be a fun challenge.

Cygnet Theatre Announces The Cast And Creative Team Of Noël Coward’s Present Laughter

Rosina Reynolds Directs Sean Murray in this Beloved British Farce

Running March 29 – April 29

SAN DIEGO, CA – Cygnet Theatre is pleased to announce the cast and creative team of Noël Coward’s Present Laughter. This classic comedy is directed by Rosina Reynolds and runs March 29 – April 29 at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town. Opening Night for media is Saturday, April 1 at 8:00 PM. Tickets and information are available at CygnetTheatre.org.

Present Laughter is lighthearted farce that celebrates playwright Noël Coward’s legendary wit and larger-than-life persona. Based on Coward himself, actor Garry Essendine is the star of the London theatrical scene at the height of his fame and adored by legions of admirers–perhaps a little too much. Fans regularly throw themselves at Garry’s feet, drawn in by his charm and charisma, throwing his household into chaos. In the week before Garry is set to embark on an African tour, he is forced to juggle a besotted young woman with stars in her eyes, an unhinged young playwright obsessed with being in Garry’s presence, his best friend’s wife who is determined to seduce him, his manager, his producer, his secretary, his estranged ex-wife, and an impending mid-life crisis.

“The artistic team turned to Sir Noël Coward when we were looking for a classic comedy to bring to Cygnet. His plays were ahead of their times and are certainly fun and relevant today,” states Artistic Director Sean Murray. “I’ve been a Coward fan and aficionado since I was a teen. Something about his steadfast determination to create himself without apologies was inspiring to me. I find his classics to be sophisticated and deceptively light. They are, in fact, very astute and hilariously clear looks at the expectations set upon us by society and the truth and reality that underlie and challenge those expectations. Coward’s characters, especially the women roles he wrote, are defiant and know what they want.”

Reynolds followed with,”Noel Coward’s Present Laughter is a perfect example of High Comedy, or Comedy of Manners. It’s a far cry from bloodless refined wordy plays – their themes are mostly sex and money. The wit is sparkling, the language as often used as a weapon as used for seduction. These are characters who know how to spar verbally, and enjoy every minute of it.”

Featuring Cygnet Theatre’s Artistic Director Sean Murray as Garry Essendine, the cast includes Drew Bradford (Fred), Trevor Cruse (Roland), Melissa Fernandes (Monica), Steven Lone (Morris), Lindsey Young (Daphne), Annie Hinton (Miss Erikson/Lady Saltburn), James Newcomb (Henry), Shana Wride (Liz), and Amanda Sitton (Joanna).

Reversing roles after Sean Murray directed Rosina Reynolds in the rotating rep Hay Fever and The Vortex (2015), Reynolds will now direct Murray in Present Laughter. Murray will also be reunited with former Private Lives (2010) cast members Annie Hinton and Shana Wride.

In addition to direction by Reynolds, the creative team for Cygnet’s production of Present Laughter includes scenic design by Tony Cucuzzella, lighting design by Colby Freel, sound design by TJ Fucella, props design by Bonnie Durbin, costume design by Elisa Benzoni, wig and makeup design by Peter Herman, casting by Kian Kline-Chilton, and stage management by Craig Campbell.

Tickets for Present Laughter are on sale now and may be purchased in person at the box office located at 4040 Twiggs Street in San Diego Old Town Historic State Park, by calling 619-337-1525 or by visiting cygnettheatre.com. Regular ticket prices start at $32.

About Noël Coward:

Born in 1899 in Teddington, Middlesex, Noël Coward made his name as a playwright with The Vortex (1924), in which he also appeared. His numerous other successful plays included Fallen Angels (1925), Hay Fever (1925), Private Lives (1930), Design for Living (1933), and Blithe Spirit (1941). During the war he wrote screenplays such as Brief Encounter (1944) and This Happy Breed (1942). In the fifties he started a new career as a cabaret entertainer. He published volumes of verse and a novel, Pomp and Circumstance (1960), two volumes of autobiography, and four volumes of short stories: To Step Aside (1939), Star Quality (1951), Pretty Polly Barlow (1964), and Bon Voyage (l967). Coward was knighted in 1970 and died three years later in Jamaica.

Cygnet Theatre Announces The Cast And Creative Team Of Evita

The Tony Award-Winning Musical Based on the Life of Eva Perón

Performances run August 9 – September 24, 2023

SAN DIEGO, CA – Cygnet Theatre is pleased to announce the cast and creative team of Evita with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. This Tony Award-winning musical is directed by Sean Murray and runs August 9 – September 24 at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town. Opening Night for media is Saturday, August 12 at 7:00 PM. Tickets and information are available at CygnetTheatre.com.

Based on true events, Evita tells the story of Eva Perón’s rags-to-riches life as she goes from poor provincial child to First Lady of Argentina. A champion of the working-class descamisados, she uses popularity and politics to serve her people – and herself. Both a beloved and controversial (and even hated) figure, Eva’s influence has left a lasting legacy on an entire country. Featuring some of musical theatre’s most iconic songs, including “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina, ” this musical masterpiece won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The 1996 film adaptation was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning for Best Original Song.

“I’ve been obsessed with this musical since 1977 when I first saw it in previews with the original cast, ” said Murray. “It’s incredible to think about how the intimacy of what happens in personal relationships can have an impact on an entire nation. The fascinating thing about this story is that Eva Peron’s hold on Argentina exists to this very day. I can’t wait to share Evita and it’s extraordinary music with Cygnet audiences.”

The titular role of Eva Perón is played by Ariella Kvashny. Berto Fernandez plays her husband Juan Perón and AJ Mendoza steps into the role the charismatic narrator Ché. The rest of the ensemble cast in alphabetical order includes Susana Cafasso Alvarado, Augusto Guardado, Justin Lunsford, Matthew Malecki (Magaldi/Ensemble/Che Cover), Daisy Martinez, Sebastian Montenegro, Vanessa Orozco (Mistress/Ensemble), Brian Osuna, Liliana Rodriguez, Tamara Sofia Rodriguez Mehl-Mchugh, Matthew Ryan, Jazz Ruiz, and Lucy Santos (Young Girl/Ensemble).

The swings are Domo D’dante and Natalia Hill. The covers are Julia Celano (Eva) and Matthew Malecki Martinez (Ché).

In addition to direction by Sean Murray, the creative team for Cygnet’s production of Evita includes music direction by Patrick Marion, choreography by Carlos Mendoza, scenic design by Mathys Herbert, lighting design by Amanda Zieve, projection design by Blake McCarty, sound design by Evan Eason, props design by Heather Longfellow, costume design by Zoë Trautmann, wig and makeup design by Peter Herman, and stage management by Craig Campbell.

CYGNET THEATRE ANNOUNCES THE CAST AND CREATIVE TEAM OF THE DARKLY COMEDIC THRILLER SHARON

Playwright Keiko Green’s Second World Premiere of 2023

Performances Begin June 7

SAN DIEGO, CA – Cygnet Theatre is pleased to announce the cast and creative

team of Sharon by Keiko Green. This darkly comedic world premiere is directed by

Rob Lutfy and runs June 7 – July 2 at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town. Opening Night

for media is Saturday, June 10 at 7:00 PM. Tickets and information are available at

CygnetTheatre.com.

Not all is as it seems in this hilarious and Hitchcockian story that makes you

question…well, everything. Sharon and Jakey are a loving mother and son, running

the crumbling apartment building in Everett, WA that’s been in the family for

generations, repainting the walls as the tenants move in and out. Or are they…?

Soon we start to realize that perhaps this family is not what they seem. Over the

course of a very tense dinner, the story unfolds and power switches hands. We

finally get to the bottom of this comedic thriller, asking the questions: What does

survival look like? And who the f*ck is Sharon!?

Sharon is technically a play about gentrification, power imbalances, about growing

up in a toxic home — but it was driven by the question: ‘What will we do to survive?'”

said playwright Keiko Green.

“The show is a darkly comedic psychological thriller. It

is rooted in emotional twists and turns that will hopefully stun audiences with an

unforgettable final scene that flips back and forth between hilarious and unnerving.

In addition to penning the script, Green will also step into the role of Tina. She’ll be

acting alongside her real-life husband MJ Sieber who plays Gregg. The titular role of

Sharon is played by Deanna Driscoll. The cast is rounded out by Rafael Goldstein

as Jake and Katherine Peña as Sabrina. In addition to direction by Rob Lutfy, the creative team for Cygnet’s production of

Sharon includes scenic design by Yi-Chien Lee, lighting design by Bryan Ealey,

sound design by Steven Leffue, props design by Alyssa Kane, costume design by

Zoë Trautmann, casting by Kian Kline-Chilton, and stage management by Dean

Remington.

The World Premiere of Sharon received its first reading in 2021 through the Bill and

Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission.

Tickets for Sharon are on sale now and may be purchased in person at the box

office located at 4040 Twiggs Street in San Diego Old Town Historic State Park, by

Cygnet Theatre Announces The Cast and Creative Team of The Little Fellow

A World Premiere by Kate Hamill

Performances run October 25 – November 19, 2023

SAN DIEGO, CA – Cygnet Theatre is pleased to announce the cast and creative team of The Little Fellow (or – The Queen of Tarts Tells All) by renowned playwright Kate Hamill. This world premiere is directed by Rob Lutfy and runs October 25 – November 19 at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town. Opening Night for media is Saturday, October 28 at 7:00 PM. Tickets and information are available at CygnetTheatre.com.

The Little Fellow is a risqué comedic drama loosely based on the life and tell-all memoirs of the 19th century’s most famous courtesan – Harriette Wilson, also known as The Little Fellow. Since the age of thirteen, Harriet has navigated through the pitiless and glamorous world of the British regency’s demi-monde: eventually becoming the “top of the bottom” as the self-styled Queen of Tarts. Her defiance of social conventions and refusal to be a lady have attracted many patrons – included some of the country’s most distinguished and high-powered men. But Harriet wants to get out of the ‘business’… and she has a plan. A plan that may threaten her reputation, her business, and ultimately, her life – as she confronts the cost of winning in an unjust world.

The Little Fellow (or – The Queen of Tarts Tells All) received its first reading through The Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission in 2019.

“Like most playwrights, I have plays ‘on my shelf’ – earlier plays that haven’t yet seen the light of day,” said playwright Kate Hamill. “That was the great gift of The Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission – to help me rewrite The Little Fellow and bring it to life; without the commission, I doubt I would have re-attacked the piece! The Little Fellow was my second full-length play, originally written in 2014 – and when I came to work on it with my friend Robby Lutfy at Cygnet in 2019, I completely revamped and retooled the script.” She continued, “This play is based on the true story of the (in)famous-in-her-time Harriette Wilson, the greatest and most unusual courtesan of her day, who brought her wealthy and powerful clients to their knees. I’m excited and grateful to bring this often-forgotten woman’s journey to the stage, and re-examine the emotional cost of power dynamics, sex work, and the intersection of gender/class roles – both in Harriette’s time and in our own.”

“I am excited to return to Cygnet to work on the world premier of a play I have loved for a long time with an incredible team of artists,” said director Rob Lutfy. “Kate Hamill is not just an old friend of mine, but one of the most produced playwrights in the country year after year. The Little Fellow is set in the world of London in the 1830’s; a world of survival. In a time when vulnerability would get you killed, one had to consume or be consumed. So what happens when an England’s most popular courtesan decides to exploit her clients by exposing them at their most vulnerable? What does it cost to win in a society with extremely regimented rules and proscribed behavior? I’m fascinated by this story’s anti-heroine and the parallels to modern women like Stormy Daniels.”

The cast of The Little Fellow includes Keiko Green as Harriet Wilson, Sofia Jean Gomez as Julia Johnstone and others, Rachael VanWormer as Mary and others, and MJ Seiber as George Noel Hill, Lord of Berwick; Mr. Stockdale; Old Man the Marquis of Worcester; Arthur Wellesley, & others.

In addition to direction by Rob Lutfy, the creative team for Cygnet’s production of The Little Fellow includes scenic design by Yi-Chien Lee, lighting design by Anne E. McMills, sound design by Steven Leffue, props design by Alyssa Kane, costume design by Shirley Pierson, wig and makeup design by Peter Herman, and stage management by Heather Brose.

Tickets for The Little Fellow are on sale now and may be purchased in person at the box office located at 4040 Twiggs Street in San Diego Old Town Historic State Park, by calling 619-337-1525, or by visiting cygnettheatre.com. Regular ticket prices start at $32.
